Choreography & Movement Direction
As a dancer and choreographer, I am fascinated by the communication of our bodies. The body is our container for action, illustration, and expression. We can be sleeping, sitting or running at full speed, either way our bodies are always saying something. Whether moving through the space or being still, fighting or simply walking, a choreographic performance amplifies this communication. I am endlessly curious about how to illustrate a theatrical concept through the medium of choreography.
I have created choreographies for many theatrical productions ranging from the traditional to the conceptual. When tasked with the job of creating choreographic material, finding movement that supports the overall narrative or concept is key. Through research and play I like to find a quality or theme that establishes the world that we find ourselves in, enhancing the text and music.
In the dance world, my own choreographic works include projects for students to adult professionals, where ideally, I can dive into movement invention and explore pure movement ideas without too many constraints. I love gesture, and unconventional movement language that investigates the beauty and pain of being human. My personal interests and research involve exploring feminist and historical themes.
When considering movement direction, I pull from my own bodily knowledge of dance and my experience as a researcher to help actors and directors bring a portrayal of a character to life. As a dance historian, I love to dive into a period project that requires research to understand that era in time. And working on a contemporary piece and finding authentic movement language for a character is equally as interesting. Adding to this are my studies of the body and its functional detail through the methods of Pilates and Gyrotonic®, which inform and enhance my artistic practice of teaching movement for the stage.
In a theatrical space, we task the body to find a heightened communication. Choreography and movement direction can allow the performer to genuinely and fully embody this conversation.
I adore creating movement for performers, and find the collaborative setting of theater productions to be a bottomless well of creative waters.
